The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between health promoting
lifestyle and sex role identity, and the relationship between health promoting lifestyle
and self efficacy. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from 268 middle-aged women for ten days from March 18 to March 27, 1998.
The instruments used in this study were instruments measuring the health promoting
lifestyle of individuals by Park, sex role identity scale developed Chung and self efficacy
scale by Sherer et al. The data were analyzed by Cronbach alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe¡¯s, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression by using the SPSS/PC+ program.

The results were as follows :
1. The average score of performance in the health-promoting lifestyle variables was
2.70. The variable with the highest degree of performance was the harmonious
relationship(3.19), whereas the one with the lowest degree was the professional health
maintenance(1.91). There were a lot of women who had undifferentiated and
androgynous in the sex role identity. The average score of self efficacy was 6.94.
2. There was a statistically significant difference according to the demographic
variables. A total health promoting lifestyle was predicted by monthly income, support
person, marriage satisfaction, marital status and necessity of weight control. Sex role
identity was predicted by monthly income and marriage satisfaction and self efficacy
was predicted by occupation, monthly income and marriage satisfaction.
3. There was a significant correlation between health promoting lifestyle and sex role
identity, self efficacy. The androgynous group showed the highest degree of
performance, whereas the undifferentiated group showed the lowest degree of
performance. A significant positive correlation between health promoting lifestyle and
self efficacy was founded.
4. Sex role identity was the highest factor predicting health promoting lifestyle. A
total of 45.2% of the variance was explained in the total health promoting lifestyle by
the sex role identity, necessity of weight control, self efficacy, occupation and marriage
satisfaction.

In conclusion, sex-role identity and self efficacy were engaged in health promoting
activity in middle-aged women.
Further studies are needed to confirm above mentioned finding and provide new
direction about women health.
